04. Is Something Missing From Your Life?

Is Something Missing From Your Life?

Are you looking for something? Is something missing from your life? It would seem that most of us are searching for something that we feel is missing from our lives. It is as if we are on an endless search to find that “something.” For many it is a search to “find themselves”; for others it is a search to find the meaning of life; for a precious few it is a journey toward God. Which is it for you?

But sometimes it seems that God is so very far away — especially when we hurt. And at times many wonder if he can be found at all. If the Bible is indeed true and in fact contains the Word of God (II Timothy 3:16-17 and I Corinthians 2:6-16) it is most comforting to realize that it records the struggles of good and godly men and women as they, like ourselves, searched and struggled for answers. The Apostle Paul said that God in the goodness of his love “has not left himself without testimony and witness” to the love that is manifest in creation (Acts 14:15-17 and Romans 1:18-23; Psalm 19:1-14). God’s love for mankind is such that he “desires that all men and women reach out for him and find him because he is not far from each one of us ... For in him we live and move and find our very existence ... We are his children.” (Acts 17:27-28 and II Peter 3:9)

Interestingly enough, Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that, “God has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men.” This passage and book shows that God’s will and purpose for man is to find happiness. The Prologue (Ecclesiastes 1:1-11) tells us that life as it appears “under the sun” is meaningless. Within the Epilogue (Ecclesiastes 12:9-14) we find that the whole purpose of man is to “fear God and keep his commands”. The Major Refrains (Ecclesiastes 2:24; 3:12-13; 3:22; 5:18-19; 9:7-9) throughout the Book balance the theme and teach us that all of life is a “gift from God” and that God’s purpose is for man to enjoy life to its fullest. But men and women cannot enjoy life apart from God and his purpose and plan. Thus only within the perspective of God and his will does life have meaning.

In the New Testament Jesus and the Apostle Paul gives us the full answer to the question about the meaning of life. Our Lord said, "I came that you may have life and that you may have it more abundantly." (John 10:10) In fact, Paul said the true meaning of life can only be found in Christ. In Colossians 2:9-10 Paul states that, “in Christ all of the fullness of Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is head over every power and authority”. In Christ we find our “completion” or “fullness”; a “fullness” which can only come from the Lord. What this implies is the fact that apart from God our lives are empty and deep down inside we know it ... if we will only be honest enough to admit the truth.
